Jeremy J Bowler

Jeremy J Bowler is the author behind the Sage and the Lotus project. He has spent 50 years studying and implementing the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and wants to share that knowledge with a new generation of "seekers after truth". He believes that the ancient knowledge revived for modern times by Maharishi is vital for the world, as the limitations of materialism become ever more apparent.

A Personal Message from Jeremy

Jeremy J Bowler

Dear Visitor,

Welcome from me, Jeremy J Bowler, to The Sage and the Lotus project!

I hope you like the articles, both the current pages and the many to come. And the books that will go into more detail, as they are published - and the Facebook posts! They are my very best efforts to explain the profound teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in a way that relates clearly to modern life.

I have spent much of my own life over the last 50-plus years following a keen interest in meditation, yoga and consciousness. Now that I am "retired", I want to share what I think I have learned - and to play a small part in bridging the enormous gap between what the modern world thinks about life and the much more richly meaningful view presented by the Enlightened Sages of the Vedic Tradition.

I do not pretend to be a Sage. I was fortunate as a young man to meet and be influenced by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who certainly was - and I have followed and studied Maharishi's teachings closely ever since.

I have taught Transcendental Meditation for more than 40 years and I am bold enough to think that I have learned some things that you might also find interesting. If all that I achieve is to encourage you to look more closely at Maharishi's own published words, I will be very happy.

Writing about oneself is problematic. It risks inflating a false sense of importance. But you will want to know something about me and my background, so I give some relevant details below.

Maharishi taught that the "Expansion of happiness is the purpose of life and evolution is the process through which it is fulfilled."

I wish you great happiness and personal evolution on your own life-journey,

With every good wish,

Jeremy J Bowler

About Jeremy J Bowler

My story

Jeremy J Bowler lives with his wife Janet in Lancashire, England, close to the Maharishi Golden Dome in Skelmersdale. He studied physics at both Imperial College London and The University of York and trained as a school science teacher at the Institute of Education in London. He has spent much of his working life in secondary schools (and a sixth form college), some as an education administrator in local government and a decade or more working full-time to implement Maharishi Foundation programmes in society. He has a married son and two grandchildren, four siblings and a lot of nephews and nieces!

Jeremy J Bowler was born in London and grew up in the North-East of England. Brought up conventionally in the Church of England, he ended his school-days at a Quaker Boarding school where he was introduced to the practice of silence. Whilst there, he also developed an interest in Yoga and meditation. Jeremy learned Transcendental Meditation (TM) in 1969, whilst studying Physics in London.

Early and profound experiences with TM made him curious about Maharishi, the founder of TM and so in 1970 Jeremy attended a month-long residence course, with Maharishi as course leader. That was in Kössen, in the Tyrol region of Austria. Later, in 1973, Jeremy travelled to Spain to complete his TM teacher training. This time on a 3 month residential course in La Antilla on the southern Atlantic coast, again with Maharishi as course leader. Those early interactions with Maharishi and the experiences gained on those courses were life changing.

Back in the UK, and married to Janet who had also trained as a TM teacher, Jeremy combined full-time school teaching with teaching TM in the evenings and at weekends. First of all in Taunton and then later in Plymouth.

In 1979 Jeremy and Janet both took the advanced TM-Sidhi course, developed by Maharishi in 1976, and learned amongst other things the famous Yogic Flying technique.

In 1992, whilst working from Plymouth as a local government education officer, Jeremy stood as a parliamentary candidate for the then newly founded Natural Law Party. Over the next 10 years he stood as a candidate in various elections, 6 times in all - and became, for a while, the Party's National Spokesperson for Education. The Natural Law Party disbanded in 2002.

In 1993 Jeremy and Janet left conventional employment and spent 10 years working full time for Maharishi. First as Managers of Roydon Hall, an Elizabethan Manor House in Kent that had been converted to a Residential TM Academy. Then as Directors of the Brighton & Hove TM Centre in Sussex.

In 1998 Jeremy J Bowler was awarded, at Maharishi's instigation in Vlodrop, Holland, the degree of Doctor of the Science of Creative Intelligence. The degree is from Maharishi European Research University (Netherlands), for "Research in Consciousness".

In 2003, Jeremy felt a financial need to return to conventional employment and so moved to Skelmersdale and a job in a nearby sixth form college. Skelmersdale is home to both the Maharishi Golden Dome and the Maharishi School, enabling Jeremy and Janet to retain a close contact with Maharishi's work, right up until Maharishi's death in 2008.

Jeremy was Chair of Governors of the Maharishi School for several years and has more recently helped the school, now a government-funded Free School, to develop a programme of Consciousness-based Interdisciplinary Studies. This new programme, for children aged 5 - 16, applies Maharishi's teachings on Consciousness-based Education to the circumstances of state funded education in the UK and adopts a modern approach to both teaching and assessment.

Jeremy's main interests at present are: family life; Transcendental Meditation and the development of consciousness; reading and writing; playing the Northumbrian smallpipes; exploring the countryside and caravanning.

Jeremy J Bowler published a first book in 2019: The Sage and the Lotus: Mind, Body and the Five Worlds.
